The story
Ruth and Carlos are a Spanish couple who moved to Dublin in 2019. Grá is the Irish word for love, and it is where the business started: they wanted to bring a piece of Ireland home, and found that other people wanted the same for their own places.
Each map is built from open map data and real elevation data, so streets, rivers, coastlines and hills appear in genuine relief. Most of their maps are gifts: the place a couple met, a first home, a wedding venue, or the hometown of someone living on the other side of the world.
Until recently every map was designed by hand after an email exchange. Grá Maps now has its own online designer, built in-house: customers search for a place, frame the area, write a title, mark up to three spots with a heart, a pin or a star, and watch the finished model appear in 3D in their browser. What they see is exactly what is printed.
